Hart Nibbrigkade 22 2597 XV Den Haag Netherlands maschke@antipolygraph.org Saturday, 30 March 2002 DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ATTN: MR. ABEL LOPEZ DIRECTOR, FOIA/PA DIVISION, MA-73 1000 INDEPENDENCE AVENUE SW WASHINGTON DC 20585 Dear Mr. Lopez: This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act (5 U.S.C. 552). I request that a copy of the following documents be provided to me: All documentation pertaining to the Atomic Energy Commission's polygraph screening program, which was in place from 1946-1953. This Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) polygraph program is documented in John G. Lindeman's article, "The Oak Ridge Polygraph Program 1946-1953," Polygraph, Vol. 19 (1990), No. 2, pp. 131-138. Lindeman notes that in 1953, the Washington office of the AEC ended polygraph screening on the ground that "it furnished only a marginal increase of security." In order to help you determine my status for the purpose of assessing fees, you should know that this request is made for public interest purposes and not for commercial use. Any documents released pursuant to this request will be made publicly available at no cost on the website AntiPolygraph.org. I am willing to pay fees for this request up to a maximum of $25. If you estimate that the fees will exceed this limit, please inform me first. I request, however, a waiver of fees for this request because disclosure of the requested information to me is in the public interest because it is likely to contribute significantly to public understanding of the operations or activities of the DOE and is not in my commercial interest. Sincerely, George W. Maschke AntiPolygraph.org PS: A copy of this Freedom of Information Act request will be placed on-line at http://antipolygraph.org/foia/foia-013.shtml
