 eye WEEKLY is a weekly supplement published by the Toronto Star.
 TorStar is a large very MOR (Middle Of the Road) suburban appeal
 Toronto Daily Newspaper. eye WEEKLY is sort of an ad feature
 which is not actually inserted into the daily itself. Instead
 some 100,000 tree murdering 20-40 page copies (with articles
 shoved in here and there) are dropped in Tabloid format at many
 littered locations through-out this fair blighted city.

 eye WEEKLY is, as you might have surmised, not sold but given away.
 It was started to compete with a Village Voice like arts/entertainment
 weekly called Now Magazine. "Now" is a marginally more substantial
 ad packed publication which was growing a little too successful and
 quickly for the big boys at TorStar's likings - thus eye WEEKLY.

 What the bleep does this have to do with anything? Well this eye WEEKLY
 has been pumping it's articles out to the newsgroups for some time now.
 The least that can be said is that it may reduce the senseless tree
slaughter.
 the most that can be said is that it's becoming almost as much of a nuisance

 as the Cancelmoose(tm). eye WEEKLY has it's own hierarchy "eye.news" and
it's
 Internet address is eye@interlog.com. Why it continues to send to regular
 newsgroups is beyond me. Please write them with your opinions. There is only

 one problem though ... all the E-mail goes through one set of (sticky)
 hands. The same hands that by all appearances determines all of TorStar
 eye WEEKLY's Internet policies. Classic attraper vingt et un.

 See no-one who actually writes/works/signs the checks for eye WEEKLY
 appears to respond/read/post to the NewsGroups their articles appear in.
 eye simply pumps out the text version of their tabloid. It isn't
 interactive in any sense in that no-one at eye actually follows the News.
 EXCEPT - and this is the hook - eye WEEKLY's "Internet Editor" Ken K.
 Kampbell (SP) - hitherto re-plumed KKK. And - shock of shocks - KKK's
 habitual internet address is - ZOINK! - eye@interlog.com. My conclusion
 (priviliged, white, wealthy, university educated male) citizens of this
 fair planet (and the eponymous title of this lil ditty) is that...

                              eye = KKK

 Readers of various newsgroups are blessed with periodic articles from
 eye = KKK <eye@interlog.com>. Articles which apparently represent the
 views & opinions of the Toronto Star's eye WEEKLY. Which, as I have
 concluded earlier has no staff person, writer or editor actually
 on-line. EXCEPT for KKK. Now I am lead to believe that not only is
 Toronto Star/eye WEEKLY's Internet committment/prescence exactly one
 person deep it is also unaware that the pronouncements of this KKK
 person are taken to represent the Toronto Star/eye WEEKLY's general
 thought/ideology.

 That's fine too. I'm just tired of eye = KKK's clotheslines and piano wire
 approach to "journalism". And I grow weary of the "so say all of us"
 one of the gang attitude of eye = KKK. Seems like on any issue relating
 to the Internet eye = KKK has to reflect the conventional party line of
 the Internet Heavies. When an issue comes up KKK runs first to his ever
 present copy of "Netiquette" for a quick orthodoxy lesson. Next he picks up
 the Jumbo Carroll and Bufallo Broadhead hotline for a quick consult with
 the ever tedious authors of Canada's dullest and only Internet guide.
 Finally, cap in hand and on bended knees KKK crawls to the presence of
 the combined insuferableness of the UNIX Systewm Operators "Cabal" monthly
 meetings for ulitmate approval of any article.

 Unfailingly anything KKK writes represents the views of these three
 lumiaries in eye = KKK's cosm(et)ology. I would understand TorStar's
 reluctance to buck the fashionable Internet Information Super Highway
 trends. I would even understand one of the thorough net.heavy windbags
 to be so completely conventional. But KKK plays hip. eye attempts cool.
 they both scream ALTERNATIVE when all that's issuing from their overblown
 organs is the same, standard drivel I can read in any newspaper in
 NorthAmerica. With a few swear words thrown in.

 You have my arguments. Your eye's have been opened. The sham stands
 revealed. Now my enlightened and illumined fans/followers, spread out into
 this virtual world and spread the message....

      eye = KKK = eye = KKK = eye = KKK = eye = KKK = eye = KKK

 ... and bring a little smile onto my face when each time I hear it and
 know that it is true. Far better a KKK charachter assassination net.loon
 label than an Allisat charachter description and a net.fraud reality.
 And the world is full of deception. And the world is full of truth.
 Some just happen to prefer the former to the latter. Your call.

 :: PARKDALE NOT QUITE A GLOBAL COMMUNITY
 ::                    by K.K. CAMPBELL
 ::
 :: On June 16, eye Net reported how UUNet Canada donated a
 :: free UUCP account to Bob Allisat (allisat@pcs.org) to
 :: improve Parkdale Community Server and help Toronto's
 :: most unique community connect. Bets immediately
 :: circulated on how long this marriage- made-in-hell
 :: would last. But most wagered it would last longer than
 :: two months.
 ::
 :: Allisat tells eye UUNet Canada cancelled his freebie
 :: deal due to "bad publicity." Asked to define "bad
 :: publicity," he says anonymous posts to Usenet
 :: newsgroups like ont.general did Parkdale in. Regular
 :: readers of ont.general and tor.general (who haven't put
 :: the word "Parkdale" in killfiles) might recall these
 :: rants -- like the allegations against a Toronto priest,
 :: of "thieving, Nazism, child molesting", standard net
 :: slander.
 ::
 :: "Freedom of expression is freedom of expression,"
 :: Allisat says. "There's no qualification, information is
 :: like water, it doesn't matter what's in the water. If
 :: they're going to start telling everyone what they can
 :: or cannot post, then they're going to have to start
 :: getting into the censoring business."
 ::
 :: In Allisat's world, there's no such thing as
 :: defamation. At all. Wouldn't that be nice? Certainly
 :: would make the journalism game a tad easier. Forthwith,
 :: eye endorses Bob as Our Man In Parliament -- move over
 :: Jesse Flis (L - Parkdale-High Park).
 ::
 :: "UUNet doesn't censor," responds Kane Hunter, a UUNet
 :: spokesperson. "This was the case of a donation. All
 :: these posts about penis foreskins and whatnot seemed to
 :: be condoned by UUNet. We know it's hard to get
 :: government funding and wanted to help. However, the
 :: stuff posted through it was not what we expected. So we
 :: sent him internal mail saying that if he became a
 :: paying customer, we'd be happy to keep him and he can
 :: write whatever he wants."
 ::
 :: Which is what he's doing, temporarily. Since he has to
 :: pay, Bob's dropping can.general, ont.general and
 :: tor.general .
 ::
 :: Allisat is fixated on attacks on the Toronto FreeNet
 :: and The Canadian Internet Handbook co-author Jim
 :: Carroll (jcarroll@jacc.com). But, ever the
 :: internationalist, Allisat made enemies all over Usenet.
 :: At the end of July, John Martinko (martinko@netcom.com)
 :: began passing Allisat material to the newsgroup
 :: alt.usenet.kooks .
 ::
 :: (continued...) Jim Mercer (jim@reptiles.org),
 :: administrator of ultra-sexy Reptilian Research, noted:
 :: "Another way to look at this is to say that UUNet
 :: Canada is encouraging pcs.org to become a more
 :: community-oriented service, rather than a private
 :: podium for Bob to rant about the Toronto FreeNet."
 ::
 :: Meantime, Allisat's asking for someone to give him
 :: another free account. Please form an orderly line.

     Not long after that pcs.org folded. Still
     wondering what if any signifigance these events
     hold. Still believing it was not all lost time.

 <                  The Community Server...
 <
 <
 <
 <    by  Bob Allisat                   allisat@non.com
 <
 <
 < ...is a concept in providing information, entertain-
 < ment and electronic mail which seems in tune with the
 < emmerging realities of our time. A group of people
 < within a ten or fifteen minute walk from each other
 < get together. They see what the want and need, what
 < money they have and what computer equipment they have
 < lying around. They kludge together a system add some
 < "user friendly" Mac and Windows software and then
 < scrape together enough money for a line or two. Add
 < a free "Internet" feed and presto... accessable,
 < local and International Electronic mail, news,
 < information and all that stuff. NOW not in some
 < cyber-tommorrowland. But, you holler, there are
 < FreeNets springing up all over the place that do
 < just that. Well maybe in the small town FreeNet.
 < In the big city FreeNets it ain't so. The standard
 < city FreeNet is hughmongous. It uses software that
 < IS difficult to use and no-one is there to explain
 < how to use it. FreeNets are organized to be big.
 < They play the "econonomy of scale" big game. A Hundred
 < telephone lines + ten or fifteen commitees + mostly
 < computer programmers running the show + one "Help"
 < telephone line = confusion for Mr Everyman and despair
 <    for Ms Everywoman.
 <
 < FreeNets resemble the corporate North America largely
 < responsible for our collective woes and are populated by
 < individuals drawn from the business world of similar
 < solutions. They simply cannot serve Everyperson. Not
 < unless they expand to mammoth proportions. And given the
 < mood and obvious direction of the times FreeNets will
 < never grow larger. We don't have the money. It ain't
 < gonna happen, not the standard way anyways.
 <
 < The current FreeNet model is sorely in need of a
 < grassroots overhaul. This is where the Community Server
 < can save the FreeNet's big ass. See the money and ability
 < to work hard and do amazing things lies hidden in the
 < neighbourhoods. Governments, companies, businesses - and
 < FreeNets - may fail. The neighbourhoods will continue.
 <    It's so obvious that it's a wonder why no-body looked
 < there for solutions in the start.
 <
 < If the FreeNets survive - and that's not guaranteed -
 < they should by all means be preserved. In fact the
 < FreeNets will provide the information and access to the
 < Internet or Information you-know-what to the Community
 < Servers. For free. That should be the only role of future
 < FreeNets. To provide a FREE - and I mean low or no cost,
 < secure and uncensored Internet feed to Community Servers.
 < Period. In this re-designed role the FreeNet moves to the
 < invisible background. And all the people in their
 < communities take front and centre stage.
 <
 < Remember big can't serve small without small feeling
 < smaller and big getting bigger (too much Dr Suess!).
 < "Economies of scale" were wonderful in the passing
 < consumer/industrial age. Today resources dwindle before
 < our eyes, the masses of poor and unemployed world-wide
 < grow ever larger and our ecosystem is decaying as if the
 < end is not only near but here. Into this radical world
 < walked the FreeNet phenomenon wide eyed and as if it was
 < the 70's all over again. Massive banks of modems,
 < hundreds of phone lines, hunk computers, committees
 < galore, mega-budgets, government grants ... all in the
 < face of a fiscal and general crises the likes of which
 < have never been seen before. And even then the lines are
 <    ALWAYS BUSY!
 <
 < Simple fact: when the shakedown finally occurs we are
 < going to have to make some severe decisions. FreeNets
 < serve a pretty small number of people and present a
 < significantly hugh fiscal target when hunting for clean
 < air, water, soil and food money. If FreeNets served
 < millions instead of thousands well the benifits would be
 < spread around more evenly. However the standard FreeNet
 < solution cannot server everyone as is. We would have to
 < spend non-existant fortunes to make FreeNets work for
 <    everyone.
 <
 < The FreeNet design is inconsistant with the obvious
 < trends toward small, no or low capital, local, public
 < enterprise. FreeNets are large, centralized, high
 < capital, impersonal, regional entities. They resemble the
 < corporate North America largely responsible for our
 < collective woes. By that I mean relatively few people
 < gain the most from FreeNets while evryone else pays for
 <    it.
 <
 < We have to bust open this Internet, Information Age
 < clique open for all people everywhere. FreeNets can do
 < just that but only in co-operation with local community
 < servers. Instead of directly trying to help everyone
 < somehow FreeNets should just fade into the background and
 < provide technical suoport and information services to
 < local groups. FreeNets cannot handle the world. Only the
 < world can handle the world and that means a number of
 <    things.
 <
 < The FreeNet should only serve as a non-profit common
 < carrier Information Services Provider. Any group or in
 < our case neighbourhood that gets together the equipment
 < and software to serve it's people should receive free or
 < very low cost Internet services from the FreeNet. The
 < FreeNet's 10 or 200 lines could service thousands of
 < Community Servers which would in turn serve everyone. Now
 <    not in never-never-land.
 <
 < This model has the FreeNet as a utility for hundreds of
 < small, local free or very low cost services. Instantly
 < we wouldn't be at the mercy of hungry, competition driven
 < businesses for our mail and news. We could maintain
 < control of our destinies here where we live and work
 < instead of in some super brain computer a way off
 <    somewhere.
 <
 < Community servers cannot stand alone. FreeNets cannot
 < serve the world. Paired and we have a sudden solution to
 < many problems. People may still choose the big, glitzy,
 < commercial services that are everywhere rushing into the
 < Information and E-mail busniess. But if we immdeiately
 < get to work creating community servers and the FreeNets
 < alter their approach together we can offer a simple, low
 < cost, friendly and protected alternative. And then watch
 <    what happens ...

    Recently certain unsubstantiated allegations have been made
    and prejudicial actions taken by officers of Toronto FreeNet
    Incorporated regarding myself (see below).

   These actions and allegations disturb me deeply and seriously
   harm my standing as a good member in my community. Many people
   have questioned my good name as a result and this is utterly
   unacceptable.

   1. I demand a public retraction by Toronto Freenet Inc.
      of any allegation of wrong-doing on my part.

   2. I demand a public apology for any suggestion that I
      have in any way introduced or authored anything into
      the electronic media that was not already publically
      available on Toronto FreeNet in the first place.

   3. I demand that my account on Toronto FreeNet Incorporated
      be re-instated in good faith and that my vital electronic
      correspondences be preserved.

   4. I demand the resignation from the Toronto freeNet Board
      of Directors of the persons who created this unfortunate
      situation

   I trust that cooler heads will prevail among the FreeNet
   Board of Directors and that we can come to a non-litigous
   conclusion to this really sad incident. I remain a profound
   supporter of the concept of community networks and a member
   in good standing of Toronto Freenet. In solidarity...

             In the struggle towards greater
             Liberty there is only so much one
             person can humanly accomplish without
             the active support of other people
             in a similar situation. My profound
             thanks to those few friends of liberty
             who have supported my words.

             Alas, my limit in the pursuit has been
             met. It is time for others to take up
             the struggle - or not - as their own
             conscience heeds. My time is over,
             the day has come to an end. Farewell.

             I will be concentrating my efforts
             from this point hence upon my writing
             and other creative endeavors leaving
             the political struggle of UseNet and
             the NewsGroups behind. Let my last words
             here be among my first words there...

                      Never have so many
                      owed so much
                      to so few
                      who knew so little.
