2012-01-08 09:00 | fche blog enun-dorsals unexpected pride

Having escaped communist Hungary in the early 1980s (thanks, mom & dad), and having heard from afar that country’s tortured state since, I never expected to express any particular pride in it. However, it sounds like there is glimmer of hope, starting with a new constitution, controversially adopted in the last year. From what I gather, bravo.

I participated in my first karate tournament as a competitor recently. Relax and be very unafraid, for I’m old in age and tyro in skills.

As a response to my last story, I received an email from the “THEMUSEUM” CEO, David Marskell. To his credit, it was courteous and detailed.

2011-10-22 18:05 | fche blog enun-dorsals crapulent curiosity contraband

My family lives in a small town (population 90000), but is near several larger ones that we can visit for cultural stimulation. One regular destination has been the Kitchener/Waterloo The Museum. I fear though that this may have been our last trip there for awhile. The problem? This little beauty, and the audacity to use it.

2011-10-07 12:03 | fche blog enun-dorsals not dead yet

My news/media appetite has been somewhat stunted over the last few years. While I throw jaded scorn at news-radio bite-sized highlights, they are not much less deep than the blog/web/online-newspaper news/opinion material that I do read. I guess news quickies are not beneath me, but what am I missing out by not reading major news magazines? It turns out that the news media is far from dead, and produces some real gems sometimes.

Here is one long essay at Vanity Fair about California’s state finances and an earlier one by the same author about that of Greece. Here is another long essay at the Washington Post about the newly permitted privilege of buying a handgun in D.C.. Here’s another another long essay at the New York Times, about the Air France 447 accident. Each is a deep, literate coverage of the topic, without gross political colours that permeate so much journalism today. Take some time, and enjoy what the “dinosaur” media can still produce.

2011-06-07 15:44 | fche blog enun-dorsals ontario place, misplaced assumptions

Our family recently visited ontario place, just after it opened for the 2011 summer season. Having enjoyed visits there last year, we purchased a seasons pass before getting there. This was not a good idea.

2011-05-14 07:07 | fche blog enun-dorsals unlawful homeschooling

In the civilized world, children may attend “free” public school. In most parts, the law respects the freedom of the families to choose alternatives such as homeschooling. Here in Ontario, it is fairly hands-off; in other jurisdictions, bureaucrats scrutinize such arrangements. In a few places, this freedom does not exist at all. One case made the news recently: Quebec judge orders three-year-old into daycare for ‘socialization’
